GOAT GIRL RIDE AROUND

On latest single ‘ride around’ South London’s Goat Girl deliver sophistication without overcomplication. Retaining their knack for melody while changing up their sonic palette, this is a darker, dirtier beast than fans have come to know. Vocalist Lottie Pendlebury is perfectly at home in this new context, her trademark jaded drawl sounds cool and free against the tense and sludgy instrumental. The track is broken into fragments, it calls and responds, together and apart from moment to moment, these separate pieces building to construct something of formidable scale. Written during a time we were all united in isolation, the track conveys connection and disconnection, “I was listening to lots of music at the time by Phillip Glass and Deerhoof that plays with the relationship between tension and resolution” explains Pendlebury, all the while aiming to do away with etiquette and explore “below the surface to where the most interesting parts of ourselves tend to be suppressed.” Accompanied by a video directed and produced by filmmaking duo Luke Kulukundis and Mateo Villanueva Brandt from Foreign Body Productions, ‘ride around’ is the first single from Goat Girl’s upcoming third album Below the Waste coming June 7th via Rough Trade. -Adam Brown
